The margin math changed
A used Japanese hybrid sedan landed in Mombasa or Tema in 2026 typically lands at $11,000-14,000 CIF with 4-7 years of accumulated wear. A new BYD Atto 3 lands at roughly $24,000-27,000 CIF — about double, but it sells in the same destination market for nearly triple the used Japanese price because it is new, electric, and feature-loaded.
On the same working capital, a side-business importer can either move two used Corollas and earn $3,000-4,000 net, or move one BYD Atto 3 and earn $6,000-8,000 net. The math favors fewer, newer vehicles per cycle.
Less operational pain
Used Japanese imports come with hidden work: undisclosed accident history (very common from Japanese auction houses), wear-and-tear repairs the customer expects you to disclose, chassis-number registration friction in markets that look skeptically at re-imported used cars, and a constant stream of small warranty disputes after the sale.
New Chinese vehicles ship with documented OEM warranties, no accident history to investigate, and a much cleaner customer handover. For a side-business importer juggling a main job, that operational simplicity is worth real money.
Where the destination market is heading
Across our destination markets, governments are signaling clearly: lower duties on EVs and PHEVs, charging infrastructure investments, public sector EV procurement. A typical first order from a side-business importer is 2-3 BYD units in a single container, CIF to destination port, paid 30% upfront and 70% on bill of lading.
