BYD Song Plus DM-i vs Toyota bZ4X: Should You Import a Plug-in Hybrid or a Full EV?

Two of the most-requested Chinese SUVs in our catalogue answer the same question in opposite ways. The BYD Song Plus DM-i is a plug-in hybrid; the Toyota bZ4X is a full battery-electric SUV. For an importer deciding what to put on the floor, the right choice comes down to one thing: the charging reality of your market.

The Song Plus DM-i: electric feel, no charging required

BYD's DM-i Super Hybrid drives like an EV in the city — quiet, smooth, instant torque — but carries a petrol engine that acts mainly as a generator and never leaves you stranded. It refuels at any pump and tops up its battery on the move, so it works in markets with no charging infrastructure at all. For most of Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean, that removes the single biggest objection a dealer faces when introducing new-energy vehicles.

The bZ4X: a full EV with the Toyota badge

The bZ4X is Toyota's first purpose-built electric SUV, on the dedicated e-TNGA platform, with available all-wheel drive. Its trump card is trust: buyers who would never gamble on an unknown brand's first EV will accept Toyota's reputation for durability. Where electricity is cheap and at least some charging exists, it offers the lowest running cost and a premium, quiet drive — plus a nameplate customers already know.

Side by side for the export buyer

Charging needed? Song Plus DM-i: no. bZ4X: yes (AC at minimum; GB/T DC fast charging where available).

Best market: Song Plus DM-i for thin or no charging networks; bZ4X for markets with reliable, affordable electricity and some public charging.

Sales story: Song Plus DM-i sells on fuel savings without range anxiety; bZ4X sells on the Toyota badge and near-zero fuel cost.

Buyer type: Both suit retail dealers and private buyers; the bZ4X's badge helps win cautious first-time EV customers.

So which should you import?

If your customers have little or no access to charging, the Song Plus DM-i is the safer, easier sell — it behaves like an EV but never depends on one. If your market has reliable electricity and buyers who value a globally trusted brand, the bZ4X lets you offer a true EV with Toyota's name behind it. Many dealers stock both: the plug-in hybrid for the cautious majority and the full EV for early adopters.
