How to Import a Car from China: A Step-by-Step Guide (2026)

How to Import a Car from China: A Step-by-Step Guide (2026)

Importing a car directly from China can save a dealer or fleet buyer thousands per unit versus buying locally — if you know the steps. Here's the whole process, start to finish.

Step 1 — Choose the vehicle

Decide on model, new or used, and configuration (left- or right-hand drive). Tell your supplier your market — a good exporter will confirm what's available and suitable for your roads and climate.

Step 2 — Get a CIF or FOB quote

Ask for a CIF quote (cost, insurance and freight to your port) — it's the easiest to compare because it includes shipping. FOB (you arrange freight) works if you have your own forwarder. Confirm the MOQ; at Sino Gear it's 1 unit, with volume pricing from 10.

Step 3 — Confirm the order and pay the deposit

You'll receive a proforma invoice (PI). A 30% deposit confirms the order; the 70% balance is paid before shipment. Use bank transfer (T/T) and keep every receipt.

Step 4 — Inspection and loading

Before departure the vehicle is inspected and loaded into a container (or onto a RoRo vessel). Ask for loading photos — you should see your car secured inside the container before you pay the balance.

Step 5 — Shipping

Container shipping protects the vehicle best; RoRo is often cheaper for larger volumes. Transit time depends on your destination port. You'll get the Bill of Lading once the vessel sails.

Step 6 — Documents and customs clearance

Your supplier provides the certificate of origin, commercial invoice, packing list, Bill of Lading and conformity certificate (COC) where required. Use a licensed customs broker at your port to clear the vehicle and pay local duties — requirements and duty rates vary by country, so confirm the current rules for your market before you order.
