CIF, FOB & EXW Explained — Incoterms for First-Time Chinese Vehicle Importers

CIF, FOB & EXW Explained — Incoterms for First-Time Chinese Vehicle Importers

Incoterms are the three-letter codes (CIF, FOB, EXW, CFR, DAP) that decide at exactly which point in the supply chain responsibility shifts from seller to buyer. They sound bureaucratic, but they directly answer the questions every first-time importer of Chinese vehicles is asking: who pays the ocean freight, who insures the car against damage, who handles export clearance in China, and who handles import clearance at destination.

At Sino Gear we quote primarily in CIF and FOB. Here is how to decide which one is right for you.

EXW (Ex Works) — almost never the right answer

EXW means Sino Gear hands you the keys at our yard in Hefei, Anhui. Everything after that — Chinese export documents, trucking to the port, Chinese customs clearance, ocean freight, marine insurance, destination clearance, inland delivery — is on you. For first-time importers this is a nightmare because you need a Chinese forwarder, a Chinese customs broker and a Chinese trucker on your own.

EXW is sometimes used by very experienced traders who already have their own Chinese logistics chain, but for 99% of buyers it is not the right starting point. If you see an EXW quote that looks cheap, remember the cost gap closes fast once you add Chinese export handling.

FOB (Free On Board) — the experienced buyer choice

FOB means Sino Gear delivers the vehicle to the named Chinese port, completes Chinese export clearance, and loads it on board the vessel you nominate. From the moment cargo crosses the ships rail, the buyer takes over: ocean freight, insurance, destination clearance and delivery.

FOB makes sense when you have a forwarder you trust at destination, you already have your own freight contract (often cheaper than spot rates for large dealers), and you want to control the routing — for example, choosing a specific feeder service into a niche Caribbean port.

CIF (Cost, Insurance and Freight) — the safe default for first-time buyers

CIF means Sino Gear delivers the vehicle on board the vessel at the Chinese port, AND arranges + pays for the ocean freight to your destination port, AND buys minimum marine insurance covering the voyage. You take over at destination port arrival — destination clearance, port fees, inland delivery and unloading.

CIF is almost always the right answer for first-time importers. You get a single all-in number from Sino Gear that covers everything up to your local port, your insurance is pre-arranged, and the only unknown is destination clearance which your local customs broker handles.

CFR vs CIF: one letter, one big difference

CFR is identical to CIF except insurance is NOT included. If a forwarder quotes CFR and you do not arrange your own marine insurance, your cargo is uninsured on the high seas. Never accept a CFR quote without confirming who is insuring the cargo.

DAP / DPU / DDP — destination-side options

For some Caribbean and Middle East lanes, Sino Gear can quote DAP (Delivered At Place — vehicle delivered to a named address in your country, you handle final customs and duties) or DDP (Delivered Duty Paid — Sino Gear handles everything including destination duties). DDP requires us to register or partner locally, so it is only available on specific routes; ask for a custom quote.

How to decide in 30 seconds

First shipment, you do not yet have a destination forwarder: CIF. You already work with a destination forwarder and want to control freight: FOB. You want a single all-in delivered price and route is supported: DAP/DDP. You are a Chinese logistics company in disguise: EXW.
