We see it ordered in twos and threes by tourism operators and mid-size farms, especially in East Africa.
Great Wall Wingle 7 and Cannon — established dealer presence
Great Wall has the most mature African dealer presence among Chinese pickup brands. The Wingle 7 is the budget workhorse — single or double cab, diesel, reliable mechanicals, the kind of truck that comes back to the dealer at 200,000 km still running. The Cannon is the next tier up with better cab comfort and more modern safety, suited for fleets that drive long highway distances.
Tank 300 / Tank 700 — premium offroad for executive and security fleets
The Tank lineup is GWMs premium offroad brand. Tank 300 competes with Jeep Wrangler on capability at roughly two thirds the price; Tank 700 is a full-size offering for security, mining executive transport and government fleets. The Tank 700 Hi4-T plug-in hybrid is gaining ground in markets where fuel cost is a real constraint.
Fang Cheng Bao Leopard 5 and 8 — BYDs offroad brand
BYDs Fang Cheng Bao brand is BYDs answer to Tank — plug-in hybrid powertrains in a serious offroad package. Leopard 5 is the mid-size lifestyle SUV/pickup hybrid; Leopard 8 is the full-size flagship. These are still building dealer presence in Africa; we ship them mostly to early-adopter buyers and brand-conscious fleets in coastal markets.
Foton, JAC, JMC and Changan — the volume players
Beyond the headline brands, Foton Tunland, JAC T-series and Changan Hunter regularly land in mixed containers to West and Central African buyers. They are not glamorous, but they hit the sub-$20K price point that opens the volume side of the market.
Order-side considerations
For African fleet orders, we always recommend: order in spec packs (same color, same trim, same drivetrain) so spare parts inventory is simple; specify diesel where available — gasoline pickups are harder to refuel outside major cities; include a spare wheel + tire kit per unit; ask for the OEM service manual in English and Arabic or French depending on destination.
Pricing reality check
Container shipping per pickup to Mombasa, Dar es Salaam, Tema or Lagos runs roughly $1,300-1,800 per unit in normal market conditions, with RoRo cheaper on the high-volume West Africa lanes.
